Sunrise Kiwanis began the B.U.G. (Bring Up Grades) program in 1993 when Ron Kautzman and Dave Isakson brought the idea to adopt the program to the club. B.U.G. is a program that recognizes students who raise at least one grade without letting any grades go down, or that keep straight A’s. Since 1993 Sunrise Kiwanis have served over 20,000 students. This last round of assemblies was the largest ever, honoring 593 students! In 2013, Sunrise Kiwanis added Butte Central to the list of elementary schools served and in 2014 added Ramsay School, leading to B.U.G. assemblies at all 8 of Butte’s grade schools.
Two assemblies are held at each school, sixteen total for the year. A letter is sent to each B.U.G. student congratulating them on making the B.U.G. Honor Roll and letting the student and his/her family know when the assembly will be held. At the assembly, a guest speaker is brought in to congratulate the kids and talk to them about the importance of keeping their grades up. The latest speaker was Officer Steve Horner who brought his dog, Blue. Steve and Blue both work for the Butte Police, and the kids and parents all enjoyed seeing Blue at work. Sunrise Kiwanis also buys each B.U.G. recipient a B.U.G. gift. The B.U.G. chairperson, Kristel Callahan, works with Mile High Beverages and Domino’s Pizza to provide the students a lunch of pizza and pop as well.
The students in the 3rd – 6th grades look forward to and work hard to be part of the B.U.G. programs in February and May.
“It is fun to see the students get excited about working hard and their good grades” says Kay Duncan, Sunrise Kiwanis President. “This program would not be such a success without the dedicated teachers, secretaries, principals, and Sunrise Kiwanis members.”
The B.U.G. program is fully funded by Sunrise Kiwanis. One of the ways they fund this program is by selling Dining and More Coupon booklets. This year, the booklet contains 99 different coupons with fabulous savings in some wonderful businesses. They only have a few booklets left at Leisure Way Barber Shop on Cobban or Sugar & Spice Salon on Continental Drive.
Sunrise Kiwanis just completed their 24th year of honoring students with the B.U.G. Honor Roll and they look forward to another 24+ years of service.
